Marketplace vs Select — the thing nobody else tells you
Start here, because it changes what you are buying.
AppSumo runs more than one kind of listing. AppSumo Select deals are the curated ones — vetted by AppSumo, with AppSumo standing behind the deal terms. AppSumo Marketplace listings are third-party sellers listing their own products on AppSumo’s platform. This deal is a Marketplace listing, which the URL itself tells you: the product path is marketplace-internal-linking-related-contents.
Practically, what differs:
Support. On a Select deal, there is a curated support expectation and AppSumo has skin in the game. On a Marketplace listing, support is between you and the seller. If the seller is slow, or goes quiet, your escalation path is thinner. This is not a claim that this particular seller is unresponsive — we have not tested their support and will not guess — it is a statement about the structure of the transaction.
Vetting. Select listings go through AppSumo’s curation. A Marketplace listing has cleared a lower bar. That does not mean the product is bad; a 4.84 rating suggests buyers are happy. It means the burden of due diligence sits more heavily on you.
Deal terms. Note the 60-day redemption window stated on the listing. That is a real constraint. Buy the code and forget about it for three months and you may have bought nothing. Redeem it the day you buy it, even if you do not intend to install for a while.
Refunds. AppSumo’s refund policy is the authoritative source and it can differ by listing type — check the policy text on the listing itself at the moment you buy, because we are not going to paraphrase a policy that AppSumo can change.
None of this makes it a bad purchase. It makes it a $49 purchase you should treat as a $49 purchase: worth trying, not worth building a business-critical workflow around until you have lived with it. Our full framework for weighing vendor risk is in the guide to evaluating a lifetime deal.
The break-even maths
We cannot run a conventional break-even here, and here is why. AppSumo lists the regular price as $199 one-time. If the product genuinely is a one-time $199 purchase, there is no monthly subscription to compare against, so “months to break even” is not a meaningful number — the honest framing is a one-time $49 against a one-time $199. Whether the vendor also charges anything recurring is UNKNOWN; we could not verify a vendor pricing page independently, and we do not repeat AppSumo’s figure as though we had.
So, the arithmetic we can actually stand behind:
Calculation 1 — cost per site.
Assumption: the “unlimited website usage” on the listing means what it says, and you have sites to use it on.
- 1 site: $49 ÷ 1 = $49 per site
- 5 sites: $49 ÷ 5 = $9.80 per site
- 20 sites: $49 ÷ 20 = $2.45 per site
The economics improve linearly with your site count, and this is genuinely the strongest thing about the deal. Unlimited sites at a single low tier is rare — most plugin deals in this batch gate site count behind higher tiers.
Calculation 2 — cost against manual internal linking.
Assumption: you value your time at $50/hour, and placing related-post links by hand on a published article takes 5 minutes.
- $49 ÷ $50/hour = 58.8 minutes of your time
- 58.8 minutes ÷ 5 minutes per post = about 12 posts.
If you would otherwise hand-place related links on more than a dozen posts, the plugin has paid for itself in time. Anyone running a content site of any size clears that in a month.
What that calculation does not capture: a hand-placed contextual link inside a paragraph, with anchor text you chose, is worth more than an automatically generated related-posts block below the article. They are not the same asset. The time saving is real; the SEO output is not equivalent. Read the next section before you accept the trade.
What it actually does
Per the AppSumo listing, the plugin automatically inserts contextual internal links to related posts, matching by category and tag, and offers seven display templates for how those related items appear. It is stated as compatible with WooCommerce and with official AMP.
The mechanism matters. Category and tag matching is a taxonomy-based relatedness signal, not a semantic one. It asks “does this post share a category with that post?” rather than “is this post actually about the same thing?” On a well-organised site with disciplined taxonomy, that produces good suggestions. On a site where every post is tagged “marketing” and “seo”, it produces noise — it will happily link a 2019 news post to a 2026 buying guide because they share a tag.
The practical consequence: the quality of your output is a direct function of the quality of your taxonomy. If you have never cleaned up your tags, do that first, or this plugin will industrialise your existing mess.
Tier breakdown
| Tier | Price | Sites | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only tier | $49 | Unlimited | All — 7 templates, WooCommerce, AMP |
One tier, everything included, unlimited sites. There is nothing to decide and nothing held back for an upsell. As with WP 301 Redirects, this simplicity is worth something: single-tier deals cannot mislead you about which tier is the honest entry point, which is a failure mode we flag on several other deals in this batch.
Which tier to buy: there is only one. The decision is binary.
Who should skip this
- Anyone who wants editorial control over internal links. This is the big one. Strategic internal linking — deciding that your pillar page should receive links from these eight specific articles with these specific anchors — is an editorial act. An automated related-posts block is a different, weaker thing. If internal linking is central to your SEO strategy, do it deliberately; this plugin is a supplement, not a replacement.
- Sites with messy taxonomy. Category and tag matching is only as good as your categories and tags. Fix the taxonomy first or you are automating bad suggestions at scale.
- Anyone who needs dependable vendor support. Marketplace listing. See above. If your business depends on a plugin being maintained and supported for years, weigh that.
- Sites with fewer than about thirty posts. There is nothing to relate to. Related-content blocks on a thin site advertise the thinness.
- Anyone with a caching or page-builder setup that is already fragile. Any plugin injecting content into post output can interact badly with aggressive caching or with builder-rendered layouts. If your stack is delicate, test on staging.
- Anyone who cannot redeem within 60 days. Stated on the listing. If you are stockpiling codes for a project starting next quarter, this one will not wait.
Known problems
From the AppSumo product page, the reported criticism is that users want more advanced features and a better dashboard.
That is a mild complaint, and it is worth reading it for what it is rather than inflating it. It is not “it broke my site” or “support never replied.” It reads as the normal ceiling of a simple plugin: it does one thing, some buyers wanted it to do more, and the admin experience is functional rather than polished.
Two things we want to be honest about:
The sample is small. Twenty-five reviews. A 4.84 average across 25 reviews is a good signal but a much weaker one than 4.85 across 281, which is what the WP 301 Redirects deal carries. Five unhappy buyers would move this number noticeably. Weight it accordingly.
We have not tested the seller’s support. Given this is a Marketplace listing, support responsiveness is the variable that matters most and it is the one we cannot report on without first-hand experience.
Alternatives
Link Whisper (subscription/licence — the non-LTD option). The established tool in this category, and it works differently in a way that matters: it suggests links based on content analysis and lets you place inline contextual links inside your paragraphs with chosen anchor text, rather than only appending a related block. It also reports on inbound internal links per post, which is how you find orphan pages. It costs meaningfully more per year. If internal linking is a core part of your strategy, it is the better tool and the price difference is justified.
Your theme’s built-in related posts, or Jetpack’s related posts module (free). Many themes already ship a related-posts block, and Jetpack’s version uses its own relatedness model. Before spending $49, check whether you already have something adequate switched off in a settings tab.
Doing it by hand with a spreadsheet. Unfashionable and genuinely better for the pages that matter. Take your top twenty commercial pages, decide which articles should link to each, and place those links yourself with deliberate anchor text. Automate the long tail; hand-build the money pages. This is the approach most experienced practitioners actually use, and it is why this plugin is a 7 rather than a 9.
FAQ
What does “AppSumo Marketplace” mean for me as a buyer? It is a third-party seller listing rather than a curated AppSumo Select deal. Support is primarily between you and the seller, vetting is lighter, and your due diligence matters more. The product can still be good — this one is well rated — but the structure of the deal differs.
Is it really unlimited sites? The AppSumo listing states unlimited website usage at the single $49 tier. That is the strongest element of the offer and it is why the per-site cost falls to a couple of dollars for anyone running a portfolio.
How is “related” determined? By category and tag matching, per the listing. It is taxonomy-based, not semantic, so your output quality depends directly on how disciplined your categories and tags are.
Will this replace proper internal linking? No. Automated related-post blocks are weaker than deliberate contextual links with chosen anchor text. Use it to cover the long tail and keep hand-placing links on the pages that earn money.
What is the 60-day redemption window? The listing states the code must be redeemed within 60 days of purchase. Redeem immediately on purchase, even if you install later, or you risk the code expiring unused.
Does it work with WooCommerce and AMP? The listing states compatibility with WooCommerce and with official AMP. As always, verify on staging against your own theme and caching setup before trusting it on production.
